Shoot 1 & 2 - Final Evaluation

Shoot 1 & 2 - Final Evaluation

How has my research influenced my work?
My research from Component 2 has had a massive impact on the work I have produced in my Final Examination. One of the photographers I based research on was Jamie Davis Smith whose work was very close and personal to the subjects. I have tried to bring this into my own work by having a few close-up shots of the people I am taking pictures of as I believe this gives the viewer a detailed insight into the everyday life of the person, this is important because my criteria is everyday activities. Another photographer that has influenced my final work is Vivian Maier, I especially like the way she composed many of her images with the subject being in exceptional focus no matter how complicated the background, the images always seemed clear and focused. This is something I have been conscious about in my own work as I want to achieve the same standard of composition shown in her images. This has been introduced into my work by offering new perspectives, for example, from overhead angles, low angles and images taken behind the subject. I feel that these adjustments to the way I take the photos has helped make my work better and look a lot more interesting than if they were all ordinary shots.

How have the preparatory shoots influenced my work?
The preparatory shoots that I done as part of Component 2 have considerably influenced my Final Examination work. I feel that during the shoots I done in Component 2 I found the kind of style that I like to photograph in, more so than I did before these shoots. One thing I learnt from my preparatory shoots was that when experimenting with different angles for images it improves my photographs a lot and makes them much more interesting. For example, I like taking images from high angles looking down on an activity so that the actions of the person can be well seen. I have also found that a close-up front angle works really well when trying to gain closeness with the subject which I have tried to do throughout my work. Lastly, but possibly the biggest thing I learnt from my preparatory shoot is the set-up, close and detailed images that I use to break up a shoot. I realised from my first shoots that by taking extremely close images of objects that are relevant to the subject it helps focus and tell a story through my work. The detail from this also makes the viewer focus on the small things that are overlooked but once noticed are very interesting. For example, as my criteria was everyday activities I needed to focus on the actions that people do when moving around carrying out everyday life. This means that things like hands are a very small detail but very important, therefore by taking images of someones hands whilst they are doing something it really adds to the depth you get on the image.

How has my work developed as a result of this project?
As a result of completing component 2 and the external examination my work has developed significantly. Firstly, I feel that my technical skills have become more precise and I find it easier to control the camera to get the results I want. During Component 1, my camera generally stayed in Auto Mode whereas now during this project it was always on manual, allowing me to experiment with all aspects of the photograph. By doing this I have discovered that I like photographing with a shallow depth of field as changing the focus of an image can change its meaning entirely, something that is very useful and important when carrying out documentary photography. I can now use natural light as my source rather than using the flash to illuminate the entire image which gives it a flat appearance. Technically speaking, my skills with ISO and shutter speed have improved my images amazingly as now I have the correct exposure, without the images appearing too dark or incredibly light. From an aesthetic point of view my images have become much more appealing. I think this because I have found the style of photography that I enjoy and suits my eye best. I now enjoy shooting from different angles (low, side, front on and overhead) as I believe this adds an interest in my work rather than them all being taken from the normal point of view. As I mentioned before as my technical skills have improved I can now accurately work with the focus of my images, whereby I like to keep a shallow depth of field. This has aesthetically improved my images as there is a mixture between sharp and blurred focus that brings the viewer further into the image. During the course of this examination and component 2 preparation shoots I have found the way that I like to display my work best. My blogger has become much more neat and easier to navigate than it has been previously, this is because I have kept the layout for my Work Record's the same throughout so they all display the same kind of information. I have also started to have my images in the 'Extra Large' format on the page as this makes them clearer and the viewer can see the detail of my images much better than if I kept them as medium. Overall, I believe these improvements have changed my work in a significant way giving Component 2 and the Examination an edge over my Component 1 work.

How successful were you responding to the exam paper?

My question - Everyday Activities - Photographers sometimes record everyday activities such as travelling, eating or shopping. Robert Doisneau observed social change. Richard Billingham observed family life. Bruce Davidson recorded aspects of urban life. Make references to appropriate contextual material and produce a personal response.

Above is the question that I took on for my Component 2 work and final examination. It talks about representing everyday activities through the use of photography to show aspects like social change, family life and relationships between people. When I took on this question I immediately knew that in my images I wanted to focus on family as they are always around me which worked in my favour as I could show the true side of them and the natural ways they act. Then in my final examination I decided to show the typical everyday life of a boy versus a girl to gauge two shoots that make a comparison. I feel that these two subjects that I have photographed over the course of this project have responded to the exam paper accurately but also with a slight uniqueness. All of my shoots showed different scenes but all linked to the everyday life that someone experiences with their friends and family. Therefore I feel I have met the criteria of the exam question. I have also used many technical skills not only on the camera but in photoshop to improve my images and show what I have learnt when adjusting photos. This has helped the quality of the images I have created in response to the exam question therefore responding to it in the best way I could.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of your work?
I feel that during this project I have found many strengths in my work that helped improve the quality of what I have produced. The first strength I have discovered is the way I like to photograph things, I have found my style which is using a shallow depth of field, natural lighting and opening new perspectives that we don't see everyday activities from on a day to day basis. This has given my work a unique edge that isn't typical of everybody else's work nor my previous work. Another strength I have discovered is my ability to photoshop my images so that they are improved but not unrealistically altered. When improving my images in this way I like to use the curves tool, colour balance, hue/saturation and sometimes brightness. When I just adjust these aspects on my photograph it changes the outcome slightly or corrects some camera mistakes without making it become unrealistic or have a completely different meaning. Although there have been strengths in my work and the outcome overall is one that I am proud of there still are things that I would like to improve. When doing my final two shoots I done them both on the same day to start off with as my beginning three hours, however, the second shoot I done in this time didn't show what I wanted it to therefore I redone it and changed my perspective so that it would be different the second time around. I have also found that I haven't completely got to grips with using natural light in the evening. Most of my images at this time of day are underexposed which I think is to do with the camera settings that I used, therefore this is one improvement I would make on my work if I had to do it again.

Shoot 1 & 2 - Final Pieces

Shoot 1 & 2 - Final Pieces

Shoot 2 - Straight Images

Shoot 2 - Straight Images

The shoot below is my second shoot in my Final Examination. I have decided to call this shoot 'A typical Girl', this links to my first shoot showing 'A typical Boy' as it shows the stereotyped daily activities of both genders. I think this shoot went well well and to achieve the pictures I used my sister, Rebecca, and took photos of 'girly' things that she does like makeup, face masks and doing her hair.

This first image shows my little sister putting mascara on looking directly into the lens. The reason I took the image with her straight on and staring into the camera was so that the photograph was from the perspective of her looking into a mirror. I think this is very effective because it is very natural and her facial expression shows concentration, the way she would be naturally when putting on makeup.

This second image was taken from behind Rebecca as she is doing her makeup in the mirror. I wanted to take this image because it shows the area, tools and makeup she uses on a daily basis. This is her normal set-up therefore is part of her everyday life and is an important part to show in the process of her getting ready. I like how in the mirror you can see just a small part of Rebecca's reflection, I think this adds depth to the image.

This photograph is of the actual makeup that is used in the process of getting ready. I decided to take this image so that the shoot had a 'break' in the middle as it doesn't all show action. I think these very focused, detailed and close-up images are important in the style of my shoots as they feature in all of them.

This is one of my favourite images from the shoot because I really like the close-up feel of it. Again the perspective it is taken from gives the the viewer the feeling that she is looking into the mirror therefore the facial expression she has shows the true way she acts. This is one of my best images because I think the different textures in it, the colour and nature light makes it very interesting and pleasing on the eye.

This last image shows my sister the a side angle sorting out her hair tools on her bed, although you cannot see that in the image. I think the photograph is very relaxed and shows the calming nature of pampering yourself. The image is very feminine and soft because of the soft lighting and mated colours giving a kind of angelic look.

Shoot 2 - Work Record

Shoot 2 - Work Record

Details of the shoot -
Date - 27th April
Duration - 1hour

Plans for the shoot-
My plan for this shoot is to show the typical everyday life of a girl. To do this I will use my little sister, Rebecca, as the model who will carryout these activities in order for my to shoot them. I will try to display different activities such as doing makeup, face masks, brushing hair and pampering. The will be done at home, the natural setting for these types of activities.

What I hope to achieve -
I hope that at the end of this shoot I will have a set of images that show the typical life of a young girl in terms of beauty and appearance. As I know these are a huge parts of young girls lives it is important to show them in the manner they are done without showing them in a fake way. Therefore I am going to keep it as natural as I possibly can.

What I actually achieved -
Below are three images from the final shoot titled 'The Typical Life Of A Girl', these in my opinion are my best images showing what my criteria was.

This is the first of my best three images from my final shoot titled, 'The Typical Life Of A Girl'. This particular image is of my little sister doing her makeup, putting mascara on whilst sitting on the bed. I think this image really shows the typical life of a girl because doing makeup is something that is heavily stereotyped towards women, especially young girls who are just starting to experiment with their appearance, therefore at this moment in time its something that is a big part of a teenage girls life. I think the image is very effective because of the perspective it was taken from, I decided to take the photo front on so that it looked like my sister was looking into a mirror when she was a staring into the camera lens. This really helped me focus the image on just her and have a slight blur in the background which made Rebecca the main subject of the image and where your eyes are drawn. To do this I used a camera setting of F/4.5 which ensured that the focus of the camera would be shallow therefore only show the subject in great detail. This worked out well as the background was slightly complicated therefore if it was in shape focus it would have overpowered the image and made it look messy. I used natural lighting for this photograph to ensure I got the correct exposure using settings of 1/50secs and ISO 6400, which gave me the exposure you can see above.

Secondly there is this image from my final shoot which I think is one of my best ones. The image shows the makeup that my sister used in some of the other photographs but in great detail and close-up. The image above therefore has a lot of depth to it as where the natural light is coming form the right of the image, shadows have been cast slightly and the detail has been illuminated. The odd pop of colour from some of the makeup and tools is really effective as it is bold against the wooden background giving the image an interesting edge. The reason I took an image this close-up to some of the m makeup and tools is because it gives the shoot a 'break' form some of the action going on, it focuses the photographs and takes the viewer into more depth of the everyday activity. It also regains focus on the small details we overlook in everyday life, therefore taking an image of the way the makeup has been accidentally laid shows the things we miss when getting on with daily life. As this image was very close-up anyway I only needed a shallow depth of field, therefore used an F/4.5, as I mentioned before the image had natural light from a window coming from the right hand side of the image. This meant that I didn't need a very high exposure, the camera settings were shutter speed 1/50sec and ISO6400 to ensure everything was well lit but not overexposed.

This is my last image in my work record from the final shoot. The above photograph shows my sister putting on a face mask in the bathroom. Similar to the first image she is looking into the camera lens like it is the mirror, giving the image a  natural look where there is no false expression. The is effective as it draws the viewer in by engaging them and making them focus on the subject of the photo, Rebecca. The image is slightly dark which I quite like, it is this way because it was taken with natural lighting in the bathroom as it was approaching evening. Although the image may seem slightly dull it is still well exposed and lit enough for you to be able to see the detail. To ensure the image was lit enough I used camera settings of 1/40sec and ISO12800, this gave me the correct exposure that you can see above. This image was a close-up so the depth of field didn't have to be very deep therefore an F spot of F/4.0 was to makes my sister in focus. I think one of the best aspects of this photograph is the different textures that it shows, for example my sister sweet hair, the face mask and her lips are all different textures and show up on the camera differently. This wide range make the image highly detailed and very interesting.

Shoot 2 - Computer Experiment

Shoot 2 - Computer Experiment

Experiment 1 -
Before -
After -
When experimenting with this image I decided to do something completely different in order to show the wide range of skills I have picked up over the course of the year. The above image has been edited doing an inverse colour change, this is very different and shows an unrealistic version of the image. However I do think this is very effective and interesting in terms of its uniqueness.

Editing process -
The first step to this process was to select the areas that I wanted to keep in colour. I decided that as my sister has green eyes and was wearing a green jumper I would select these as my main areas. Once I had selected these areas I pressed inverse which ensures that when sung the black and white tool it would  be the rest of the image changed not the area I selected. Once this was done I used the black and white tool to change it to black and white.

Once I had done this the green areas that I selected weren't very obvious and didn't stand out very much therefore I decided to adjust them. I done this by using the hue/saturation tool and moving it almost all the way up the spectrum towards the pink end which made the green areas go a turquoise colour, this made them very bold and saturated. I really like the outcome of this edit as I think it is pleasing on the eye, unique and very interesting.

Experiment 2 -
Before

After -
The image above I have edited to make it look more realistic and natural. As you can tell the original image had a slight blue tint to it which I have corrected so that it looks a normal colour. This is aver simple edit however it has massively improved the overall look of the image.

Editing process -

The first thing I done when going about editing this image was used the 'colour balance' tool. Using this tool I manage to balance out the blue tint that was on the original image form the lighting. To do this I moved the top bar towards red, away from cyan which was the colour of the tint, therefore returning the image back to a normal state. This slight and simple movement massively improved my image without having to do much.

The second adjustment I made as part of the editing process was use the 'hue/saturation' tool to bring some life back into the dull image. From changing the colour balance the image became bleak and very boring therefore needed some more saturation for the colours to stand out. By moving the saturation bar up to +25 it meant that the image became more interesting and overall improved. I think this editing process turned out really well despite it being quite simple it made a lot of difference to the original image.

Shoot 1 - Computer Experiments

Shoot 1 - Computer Experiments

Experiment 1 -
Before

After

I decided that for his photograph I would convert it to black and white as my first computer experiment. I thought that this would be an effective change to make because as I have mentioned before the main subject of the photo, being Jordan and the computer screen, is the area with the only colour in it, the rest is mainly white, blank space. Therefore converting it to black and white meant that the centre of the image was even more emphasised and was the only area with dark bits in it. I really like the outcome of this because it makes the before, very normal image a lot more interesting and pleasing to the eye.

Editing process -
The first thing I decided to do in photoshop was use the black and white tool in order to introduce the black and white effect. As this already comes with pre-set settings of where the colour bars are I decided I could mess around with it slightly and make the colours that I wanted stand out. The main colour I changed was red as this made some of the details on the screen a lot more evident but also darkened part of Jordan which made him appear very flat and lacking detail, therefore I done the following step.

The second thing I done to correct the effect of darkening the red was using curves. When opening the curves tool I moved tone top part of the line up above the pre-set curve which lightened the dark areas more. This brought back a lot of detail that was previously erased, for example Jordan's hair and where his hands are. This gave the overall effect that I wanted it to and gave the image a very striking appearance.

Experiment 2 -
Before

After
When using photoshop to experiment with this image I wanted to change the highly saturated appearance of it and tone it down as such. I like the results as it appears in a slightly more realistic light whereby the weight looks more shiny and the background is less detailed. This experiment was to test the way the image would look when some of the colour was drained away and the shadows exaggerated.

Editing process -
The first step I took in the editing process was to use the hue/saturation tool to bring down the saturation. I moved the bar down to -45 which took the very bright, unrealistic colour out of the image. I like how this turned out however I thought that at this stage I feel that some life and dimension had to be brought into the image.

This brings me to my second step where some of the dimension and detail was brought back into the photograph through the use of curves. By using curves I was able to bring back the shine on the weight and some colour back into Jordan's hand and the background. Therefore, all in all I think this computer experiment turned out well as the results I got I think are slightly different to the basic editing process.
